Plan your first call to a solicitor

Choose the help you need and what matters to you. We’ll put together questions you can print or copy and use with any firm.

Questions for your first call

Use these questions to understand how a solicitor could help and what the work would involve.

Start with the help you need

  1. Does your team regularly help with situations like mine?
  2. Who would do the work and keep me updated?
  3. If I choose your firm, what happens next?

Understand the costs

  1. Is the first call free? If not, what will it cost?
  2. Please send me a written quote. What work does it cover?
  3. Does the total include VAT (a tax) and other costs?
  4. When would I need to pay? Do you need money before you start?
  5. What could change the price? Will you ask me before doing extra work?
  6. Can we agree a budget? What would I pay if I stopped the work?

Before the conversation

  • Write a short note about what happened and what help you need. Have any key dates ready.
  • Ask which papers the adviser needs and how to send them safely. Do not send private documents before checking.
  • Ask each solicitor firm the same questions so you can compare their answers.
  • Ask about support you need, such as an interpreter, step-free access or written updates.

You don’t need to explain everything perfectly. Start with what you need help with and let the solicitor guide the conversation.
