Check the firm and the person
Search the SRA Register yourself and compare the firm’s exact name, SRA number and contact details with the information you were given. A copied name or registration number on its own does not confirm who sent you a message.
- Check the firm’s listing on the official register.
- Check the individual solicitor and the firm they work for.
- Use a phone number you have checked independently if you need to confirm a message.
Look closely at email and website addresses
Read the full address, looking for extra words, missing letters or a slightly different spelling of the firm’s name. Compare it with the official details rather than relying on the logo or display name.
If a message says the firm’s bank details have changed, call on a number you have checked independently before paying.
Confirm a payment change by phone. Replying to the email that announced it may simply reach the same person who sent it.
If something does not match
Pause before sending money or documents. Contact the firm using independently checked details and look at the SRA’s scam alerts.
If you think you have sent money to a scammer, contact your bank promptly and report the suspected fraud.
