Make this checklist your own
Choose a legal service, a firm and anything else you want to ask about. Build a checklist to print or copy.
Before the call
- Write a short summary of what you need help with.
- Note the important dates, especially any deadline coming up.
- Have relevant documents or reference numbers nearby. Check the firm before sending sensitive documents.
- Think about what you would like help with first.
Six questions to ask
- Does your team regularly help with situations like mine?
- Who would do the work and keep in touch with me?
- What would happen first, and how long might it take?
- What information do you need from me?
- How are the fees worked out, and what might cost extra?
- How often should I expect an update?
A useful tip
You can tell the firm you’re speaking to a few solicitors before deciding. Ask them to explain any unfamiliar words.
Before you agree to go ahead
Read the firm’s written explanation of the work, fees and terms, often called a client-care letter. Ask about anything that differs from what you discussed.
Check the firm’s identity and payment details independently before sending money.
